Women's book club in the heart of Ashbourne in The Peak District

Want a community where you can let your hair down, spend some time away from parental responsibilities, enjoy intellectual conversation (or not), and meet other women who feel the same daily pressures as you do? That's what Whisper and Wine is all about!

London, 1959: An only child of a lonely mother and a bookseller father, Cara grows up alongside the vibrant “Little Italy” community of Clerkenwell. At school she meets and ultimately falls in love with Tony Herrin but cannot understand why they never achieve the closeness she craves.
In 1966, aged 18, Cara takes a temporary job in Florence cataloguing a library, only to find herself helping as a “mud angel” during the catastrophic floods of November that year. Cara’s mother’s story is told in parallel: a wartime marriage with an austere and undemonstrative man and an unexpected passion for the son of a neighbour, which ultimately explains her keenness for her daughter to have wider opportunities.
The close-knit Italian community of Clerkenwell is described vividly, the joys of life as well as the shadow cast by the tragedy of the ship Arandora Star and the privations of the bleak winter of 1946. Similarly, 1960s Florence comes alive (how soon one forgets the palaver of ringing home from those booths!), along with the work of reconstruction following the disastrous bursting of the Arno’s banks.

With all life's chaos, women are often the last one's the spend time for themselves. Whisper and Wine gives you the chance to let your hair down, enjoy laughter and friendship, indulge in interesting conversation (and wine), and just have time for you for a couple of hours.

I'm the owner of The Co-Working Spot and absolutely love reading books! The only problem is, I never get time. I'm 45 this year, a mom of teens and run my own business so you can imagine, I'm pretty time poor.
Through the book club, I'm hoping I'll give myself more opportunity to read the books we pick, and am looking forward to making new friends who join us.

A warm welcome! Don't be nervous if you're coming alone, you will quickly make friends. When you arrive we'll spend some time getting to know one another and chit chatting before we start discussing the book.
The book for the month is always featured here on the website and details are given at the meetings. As a book club we can obtain up to 8 copies of books to bring to the next meeting. We'll find out who needs one and get copies on a first come first serve basis. You can find the book in bookstores, please try Brown Onion Books in Ashbourne, or on Amazon, we'll give a list of recommended retailers. You may also be able to get the book at your local library.
The £3 entry fee covers the cost of snacks and hot drinks and my time to put the event on and market it.
The space holds 15 people, so to make sure there is room for everyone, it's important you book in advance. We cannot guarantee a space if you show up on the evening.
First we'll have some casual time for catching up, then we'll come together to discuss the book. Everyone will get the opportunity to share their thoughts. At the first meeting we'll put everyones next book suggestions into a hat and pick one out. That person will stay out of the hat until everyone has had a chance to have their book suggestions picked.
